Last Z Best Formations — Faction Combos & Hero Placement

Formation Guide • Updated January 2026 • Season 4

Why Formation Matters

Your formation determines your combat power more than raw stats. The right faction combination can let you beat players 10-15M power above you, while a bad formation wastes your strongest heroes.

Key factors that affect formation strength:

Faction Counter Triangle

Understanding counters is the foundation of formation building:

  • Wings of Dawn → defeats → Blood Rose
  • Guard of Order → defeats → Wings of Dawn
  • Blood Rose → defeats → Guard of Order

Why Wings of Dawn wins: Blood Rose was released first, so ~70% of players built around it. By focusing on Wings of Dawn, you automatically counter the majority of opponents. This is the easiest way to punch above your weight in PvP.

Best Formation Builds

Recommended: 3 WoD + 2 BR (Counter Meta)

Best all-around formation for most players:

Why it works: You counter Blood Rose players while getting the damage resistance bonus from mixing Season 3 and Season 2 heroes.

Alternative: 3 GoO + 2 WoD (Anti-Counter)

Use this if your server meta shifted to Wings of Dawn:

Mono-Faction (Advanced)

Only viable if you have 5 S-tier heroes from one faction:

Hero Selection Priority

Not all heroes are equal for formations. Prioritize based on their 3rd skill:

S-Tier (Must Have)

A-Tier (Good)

Avoid in Main Formation

See our Heroes Tier List for specific hero rankings.

Hero Placement Guide

Where you place heroes affects buff application:

Formation by Game Mode

Mode Recommended Formation Notes
PvP / SVS 3 WoD + 2 BR Counter meta, max combat stats
Canyon Clash 3 WoD + 2 BR Same as PvP, coordination matters more
Zombie Siege Best DPS heroes Faction counters don't apply to PvE
Furylord Match daily faction Switch faction based on rotation

Common Mistakes

How to Build Your Formation

  1. Pick your main faction — Wings of Dawn recommended
  2. Get 3 heroes from main faction — prioritize troop buffers
  3. Add 2 heroes from secondary faction — for synergy bonus
  4. Check hero skills — remove utility heroes, add combat buffers
  5. Place Commander — strongest all-troop buffer
  6. Align troops — match remaining heroes to your troop type

For power optimization, see our Formation Power Guide and Power Guide.

Troop Types Explained

Last Z has three troop types, each aligned with a faction:

Troop Type Best Faction Strengths Top Heroes (Buffers)
Assaulters Blood Rose High damage, frontline pressure Selena (+15% attack), Yu Chan, Licia
Shooters Wings of Dawn Ranged DPS, backline safety Queenie, Liliana, Alma (+Shooter buffs)
Riders Guard of Order Mobility, flanking Amber, Dodemeki, Sakura (+Rider buffs)

Matching Heroes to Troops

Which Troop Type to Focus?

Focus on ONE troop type that matches your faction:

Why single troop type? Hero buffs stack. A formation with 5 heroes buffing Shooters will massively outperform a mixed troop army.

FAQ

What is the best formation in Last Z?

3 Wings of Dawn + 2 Blood Rose heroes. This counters the Blood Rose meta while getting synergy bonuses. Focus on heroes with troop combat buffs.

Should I use mono-faction or mixed?

Mixed (3+2) is better for most players. You get faction counter advantage plus cross-season synergy. Mono-faction only works with 5 S-tier heroes from one faction.

What faction should I focus on?

Wings of Dawn. It counters Blood Rose, which most players use because it was released first. This gives you a natural advantage in PvP.

Does hero placement matter?

Yes. Commander slot gives extra bonuses — put your best all-troop buffer there. Match troop-specific heroes to your main troop type.

Should I switch formations for different modes?

For PvP modes, keep your counter formation. For PvE (Zombie Siege), use your highest DPS. For Furylord, switch to match the daily faction rotation.
